FORT COLLINS --- The 25th Great Gorilla Open was played Feb. 2-4 at the Fort Collins Club featuring some of the biggest names in handball. Top ranked Killian Carroll dethroned two-time Gorilla Champion Sean Lenning in an exciting final 10, 11. Armando Ibarra Jr. repeated last year’s performance with the 2018 Open Championship. Eighteen-year-old Jon Gutierrez won two tiebreakers en route to the “A” title. Promising newcomers Giles Haycock, and Preston Pavich won the “B” and “C” titles respectively. Aimee Fadden won the Women’s C easily, as did Ken Scott in the 50+. The 60+ division saw Bob Paulsen end John Roder’s Gorilla run. David Lippman battled Jeff Leeson to a grueling 15, 20 win in the 70+ division. Finally, the doubles teams of Sherwin Beck/Mike Hardy, and Terry Nett/Lewie Lambert took home first place in the 60+, and 70+ respectively.
Thanks to tournament directors Dennis Madden, Terry Nett, Guy Arnesen, the Fort Collins Handball Association, and the Fort Collins Club for hosting this competition. A big shout out goes to the USHA, WPH, and the entire Colorado Handball Association membership who supported this event.
