Salt lake City, Utah
The Sports Mall in Murray Utah was the host venue for the 2018 edition of Utah State Doubles Handball Tournament. This was without question the strongest field in years with 16 amazing teams in the Open and the A.
The Open quarters saw last years champs Dom Sanone/Colorado's Kevin Price falling to the team of Gary Scogin/Rob Bell on the top side of the bracket while Sonny Roberts/Ryan Campbell went down in a breaker to Jim Karner/Zac McManus. The final was well worth the wait as 7 time national champ Karner and new partner McManus took game one 21-9 only to see 8 time national champ (and 2 Worlds) Gary Scogin and Rob Bell storm back to win game two 21-18 and push a final breaker. In the breaker, with Scogin/Bell up 10-7 the match looked be over, but with a side out and another serve opportunity McManus got hot and scored the next 4 points to secure the team win, 11-10.
The A, also loaded with talent saw Adam CAHOON/Bryce Brown falling to crowd favorite George Blocker and new partner Sean Von Roenn in the top half quarter finals while the bottom half quarters saw Dom Alvarado/Levi McCormick take down AJ Allan/Jon Larson in 2 straight. In the final Blocker/Von Roenn squeaked out the victory in yet another hard fought breaker.
The B saw Utah State's Jensen/Jensen brothers out lasting team Heber's Danny Picos/Erick Alvarado in another entertaining and hard fought final.
The 50 plus division would be a round robin format with 4 strong teams consisting of Larry Lewis/Dave Leopardi, Lon Stalsberg/Ruben Garza, Rick Muldover/Scott Beebe and John Wainright/Dan Price. After battling all weekend, it was Wainright/Price taking home the hardware with 3 wins, while Stalsberg/Garza took second place with 2 victories.
