Stan Wolpoff
Proud to be the first person inducted as both player and contributor, Stan was introduced to handball early on. Both parents were competitive players at Coney Island’s Washington Baths. Enticed by a Nathan’s hot dog, crispy fries, and a Shatzkin’s knish, Stan first shagged handballs at the Surf Ave. courts.
But Stan didn’t play or earn his first college A until an Ohio State University required gym class. He didn’t play again until moving to Colorado and winning his first State tournament in a ‘D’ bracket. Moving successfully through the divisions, he won both 3 and 4-Wall singles and doubles events. Stan also began a remarkable string of Les Shumate 3-Wall Tournament victories. From 1997 through 2009 he and his partners (Starr, Greene, Huegi & Sipes) only lost in the finals twice.
His contributions to Colorado Handball include: Travel League Captain, CHA Executive Board member, influenced the City of Boulder to refurbish their 3-Wall courts, inaugural member of the HOF committee and a Director of State Singles and Doubles Tournaments since the early ‘90s. Most rewarding, he established handball classes in Boulder County for both gym and after school programs, supported by Boulder volunteers and Costigan Youth Handball.
