Handball Newsletter 1st Quarter 2008

Colorado Handball Association Newsletter

Dedicated to the Perfect Game

In This Issue:

  1. HOF State Doubles Entry
  2. President's Corner
  3. Tournament Schedule

Sorry for the delay in getting this newsletter out. What a beginning to the year!! Terrific Great Gorilla with the return of Randy Nett. Our own "Bear" Meiring gave Randy a lesson and provided him with some insights about where Colorado Handball has gone since he left. Randy still possess the great hands and skills he had when he was in Colorado. When the "rust" gets removed I am certain anyone that plays Randy will see an improved and winning result.

Another area future issues will try and present is a "player profile" This section will be dedicated to one player each issue that will discuss their family, kids, why they play what they do for a living, etc.

Did you know? That the CHA website has a business card directory for those members who want to let the playing community know what services they can offer them?

Currently Colorado is experiencing yet another snowstorm. It feels like #50 for the year. In any event, soon the snow will yield to the warmth of the sun and the 3-wall season is just around the corner.

Handball Players – Are They Psychos? By Mike Roth

Published in 1983 Cherry Creek Sporting Club Newsletter

What about it? Do handball players share a certain psychological profile that's, well … different? Different, that is, from players of other symbolically "combative" serve and volley sports such as racquetball, squash, and tennis? I mean what sort of deep-seated character traits cause grown adults to bash their hands to the point of being swollen, bruised, and occasionally broken? I think it's safe to assume that having a pair of beaten up paws isn't exactly the way to attract or tactfully impress, for that matter, most members of the opposite sex.

It is obvious, that in terms of physical characteristics, certain ones are conducive to certain sports. The grace of Doctor J on the basketball court would not be the same or score high marks if he were laced into a pair of figure skates in an international competition. In handball certain physical characteristics are not the main criterion for a successful player. It's definitely mental…

Handball players are addicts. There's no such thing as a "casual" handball player, you know … a game here, a game there. No, once a person transcends the bruised hand syndrome they are hooked. That's H-O-O-K-E-D. Half their life is spent playing, the other half supporting their habit.

And we certainly don't play for exposure either. A $2.00 lottery winner receives more publicity than our state champion Jim Costigan. Costigan is one of the best athletes in the state and his name isn't exactly a household word.

Then why do we play handball? Hmmm, could it simply be that no other sport will have us? See you around court #19.
