Well the summer has waned to fall and the league is in full swing. The summer brought some great 3-wall. The North Jeffco gang discovered the world of 3-wall. We had a great Costigan/Shumate 3-wall double tourney. Ron Bronner and Paul Newman put on a really great Handball/Golf tournament to finish up the year of 3-wall.
During the 3-wall doubles tournament we were fortunate to have Gary Cruz and LeaAnn Tyson fly in and give a coaches clinic We had a record 29 attendees for the clinic plus over a dozen juniors that came to play on Saturday afternoon.

Costigan/Shumate 3-wall Doubles & CHA Barbeque
The third week of August always brings the 3-wall season to a head. Players have honed their skills during the summer to see how they stack up against everyone. This year we only had 54 entries down from 80+ the year before. Many warriors had become injured and unable to play. In any event we had a great entry. Ricardo Diaz, ranked currently number 6 in the world flew in from San Jose to Play with Chip Morales from SWMSU in Springfield, MO. Bill Brainerd teamed with Travis Owens in the open and Adam Loomis also fro SWMSU in the contenders. The Ibara family represented by 5 players had a terrific tournament. For those of you who have not had the opportunity to see Alex Ibara play, make it a point to watch him sometime. He is a fine representative of the youth movement in Colorado handball. Jim Cosentino from KC and John Birtcher, both nationally ranked super golden masters teamed up to play. Once again, due to strategic injuries in the 60+ community a supermasters was not in the offering this year. The bottom line is we had 3 brackets and a consolation round.
Open – with 8 teams it was a great bracket. The semis saw Morales/Diaz play Kearney/Hammond with the other semi match having Brainerd/Owens against Meiring/Sprenger. Morales/Diaz prevailed as did Meiring/Sprenger. The final was a terrific exhibition of gets and kills. In the end however, the out-of-towner's Morales/Diaz won all the marbles.
Goldens – several of the historic doubles teams switched up this year. Stan Wolpoff played with Lance Huegi, Robin Carlsen teamed up with Danny Clark. There were 14 teams entered. The semi had Huegi/Wolpoff against Opperman/Brochu and Carlsen/Clark against Cosentino/Birtcher. When the dust settled, Huegi/Wolpoff and Carlsen/Clark won the right to play in the finals. Carlsen/Clark outplayed Wolpoff/Huegi to win their first Golden title.
Contenders – This bracket was a mini open. The finals had the Ibara's playing Loomis/Brainerd. Playing through the rain Loomis/Brainerd prevailed in a very close 3 game match. Welcom to the open gentlemen.
The BBQ was another feast as it has historically been. This we featured BBQ Pork sandwiches, vegan burgers, Kearney's famous brats, Linda Oliphants BBQ beans, and corn on the cob, chips, etc etc. Over 120 people attended this annual CHA event.
Also in attendance this year was Kathy Costigan, Molly and Becky.
Thanks to all of you who played at ate with us.

On an 82 degree day, 12 teams of Handball/Golf Warriors played against each other for a total of 11 handball games. Challenge Court rules apply in a 25 point game. The totals are added up & prioritized with the team with the most points placing 1st place. After lunch & a shower, 18 holes at Springhill GC are next played. A combination of scores & standings provide the final tally.
"Team Bear Meiring" did a repeat in 2007 with Bear's adept Handball & Golf skills. Mike Kearney & Arne Arnesen came in Second place with two teams tying for third. We need to point out one "unbelievable drive of 370 honest yards by Robie Carlsen"! On one point, we did sign up with the Aurora School system as an authorized user of the Rangeview HS courts. In the future, we can advise them of our tourney dates, and lock them up for that date.
Robie Carlsen provided the 50 year plus Trophies won by his Hall of Famer Dad, Don Carlsen. These are classics. Putters, handball gloves and golf balls were handed out to the winners. Everyone left with a prize. The cost this year is $65.00 for handball, golf, prizes & a great time, and we broke even.
We thank all of you who participated on a very long day, and may want to consider nine holes only in the future.
