3-wall in full swing

The courageous 3-wall players have braved the elements for over a month and the skill levels are improving each time they play. FYI, the Hispanic players are beginning to watch us more and more. Invite them in and show them the game. I think you will be surprised how quick they take it up and fast their skills develop.

Gene Waldvogle on summer handball activities:

So here's what's happening. Friday night the guys are playing at outdoor -weather permitting-at Sinclair. Saturday outdoor HB starts at 9:00 at Sinclair and at Boulder. Sunday at 8:30 there will be guys at Sinclair. Remember outdoor handball is the best because it's free, you don't need to get courts, there are all levels and age groups of play and it's just a real great mix of guys. If Oliver or I aren't there, the guys WILL work you in and you'll have a great time. Bring lots of water or beverage of choice-it's not uncommon to blow through a gallon or so. Depending on the crowd they usually play anywhere from 2-5 hours and you can show up at any time-it's not necessary to be there at any specific time. Fred or Ron usually have gloves and balls for sale if you need them.. If you need any other info, e-mail me or call me at 303-548-2978............Gene

Word has it that Colorado Springs has received funding for 2 courts. Ft Collins is not far behind. The future of 3-wall is looking better than ever.

For those of you who do not know Brad Mrosla, he just graduated at the top of his class in the Armed Forces Firefighting School in San Angelo, Texas. He is assigned to the Air National Guard Unit in Cheyenne, WY. Congratulations to Brad. If there are others in the handball community that have loved ones in the military, please let us know.

Shumate/Costigan 3-wall August 16-19
Get your partner lined up because this years Shumate/Costigan tournament promises to be the best yet. If you are not playing, calendar August 18, 12:00 noon for the annual CHA BBQ. $7.00 gets you great food and all the beer you can drink. It the best deal in the state. Stewy and Gregory put this on for the entire playing community. An entry for the tournament is enclosed. This tournament has grown every year and this year we expect over 90 players and 130 for the BBQ. Remember, this is a CHA event for everyone. Donations for the BBQ would be greatly appreciated. All sponsors will be noted on the sponsor's banner.

Kansas City 3-Wall

Kansas City is hosting a great 3-wall tournament June 21-24. The Handball House, bar, courts and players make this a must go to tournament. Several have expressed an interest. Tom Disadore has abundant room to house anyone desiring to go and needing a place to stay. Call Don Stewart at 303-520-9578 or Tom Disidore 913-908-9933 if you want more information. An entry for this tournament is enclosed.

Colorado Handball Players should take pride in knowing Colorado has won the SGM doubles bracket two years in a row. Last year, Louie Lambert and his partner, Dave Smith, won 1st place. In 2007, Terry and his partner overtook Lambert/Smith in the semi-finals.

The True Story of a Handball Player – Kim Coleman

Once again I was invited to a handball tournament, and once again I accepted the invitation. This time I knew what to expect. No more surprises of how rough a sport handball is, how physical the action can get between the players or the spirit and charisma of the handball players themselves. However, I did wonder if my second handball tournament was going to be as awe inspiring as my first. Maybe it was just a fluke. Maybe first impressions are easy, yet continuing a façade every time is not. So I grabbed a camera and sat back and watched. And again, the personable touch came through with players and families alike.

It really is amazing to me how the kids play on the available courts in between the matches. Pick up games happening all around and equipment being offered and given away at a whim simply because "you need it and I have an extra". I have come to realize that the spirit and true love of the sport is not just a front but a true feeling that lives in each handball player. In saying all this, I have to admit that one player did stand out at this tournament and I was asked to write about it.

Hats off to Alex Rodas. If the true spirit of the games does not exist in him, I'm not sure it would exist in anybody. Although hurt (which in this game is not surprising) he continued to dance and move back and forth in and out between players. Some of the moves that he produced were stupendous. And the fact that no other player seemed to be a real contender for him did not keep him from giving each movement 100%.

I did not realize that elbowing was allowed and quite intrigued that no one made a call when this happened. The execution and style that he portrayed with flawless effort leaves even the utmost professional speechless, and all this in spite of a leg injury. His serve was perfect. He really seemed to put all the other players to shame. Too bad all this happened at the food buffet instead of on the court. Oh well, better luck next time.

Colorado Handball Association supported the USHA Nationals with a $500 donation ad. The CHA Executive Board approved our donation at the last meeting. In turn, the USHA has provided similar funds for our CO Collegiate team activities.

State Singles Championships

The 2007 CHA State Singles' Championships were held April 20-22 at the Denver Athletic Club. This year's tournament had 84 players competing in eight divisions. The "C" Division featured 19 players including a strong contingent from Oliver Boyd's and Gene Schneider's Colorado School of Mines handball class.

There was great competition with some usual "suspects" winning their respective divisions. Some highlights include Alex Ibarra winning his first state championship in the Cs and Bear Meiring defending his title in the Opens. Thank you to all the tournament participants and their guests for making this tournament successful.

The tournament would not be possible without the volunteer help of a dedicated group of people and the very generous support of financial and "in-kind" contributors. The tournament staff consisted of Jack Feingold, Lane Feingold, Ron Bronner, Lance Huegi, Chad Gatlin, and Stan Dunlavy. Paul Newman provided his assistance with the tourney draw and match scheduling.

We received considerable financial and "in-kind" donations from the following: Jim Costigan Youth Fund, Clint Parker Fund, CHA Youth Fund, Jack Feingold, Ron Bronner, Bob Hickman, Jake Plummer, Gene Schneider, Gary Russell, John FitzGerald, Dennis and Debbie Parker, Stan Dunlavy, I Care Vision, and a "great handball friend."

The CHA also thanks the Denver Athletic Club for allowing us to host this tournament at the premier athletic facility in Colorado.

One final thanks to the Parker family and Jake Plummer for their substantial contributions to the CHA youth fund.
