The DAC Tournament team put together a well attended tourney with 56 entries in seven levels of singles, and 18 teams, or 36 players, in 3 levels of doubles. This makes a total of 92 entries overall for an excellent turnout. The DAC committee consisted of Brian Pointelin, DAC Club Pro, Stan Dunlavy, Erin Hickman & Jon Roder. Sponsors were Old Chicago & Eintein Bagels. The DAC staff put together a well run weekend of food & drinks and great courts.
A strong contingent of nine Open players including J.Garner of Alburqueque, who went through the ladder to meet Mark Hammond in the finals, but Mark pulled the 1st Place trophy with a strong performance pulling away in the second match with scores of 19/4. The Masters is always up for grabs yearly, and we had 7 strong contenders, but infamous Steve Bauer, once again, proved to be Mr.Consistent again. He and Steve Meyer, Ft.Collins, had a competitive match with scores of 16/19. Steve Bauer just came back from the National YMCA in Dallas, where he took 2nd Place in the 40-50 combined division. One of our famous Colorado sons.
The "A" Division had 6 contenders including "kids" like Stan Wolpoff, Boulder. In the end, K.Price won the finals over Phil Hammond, Mark's brother with scores of 8/15. The "B" Division had a full ladder with 12 players with Bill Ernstrom winning the finals over "Mr. Sugarman", Jesse Lujan, with scores of 3/6. Bill has worked on winning the B's for the last 3-4 years, and a "big tip of the hat" to him!!!! It took four wins to place First. We are seeing some new faces with the 8 who played in the C Division with M.Castagneri taking home the Oscar with a win over J.Darabaris with scores of 9/7.
One of the toughest growing categories is the Golden Masters with nationally rated players like "Father Mike Hulbert", who has won the Nationals, and placed second more than once. Jim Costigan, former 3 Wall National Champ, has come back a long way from his knee injury, but lost to Terry Nett, Ft.Collins, in the finals with scores of 12/12. This level of play displays discipline, strategy, experience & a doggedness for winning along with a reputation for staying in great shape. Mack Roberts has done it again, with a win the Super Golden Masters over Ron Sedlock with scores of 4/10. Mack, has kept up a regimen of weightlifting, handball & a "mean personality" cultivated for winning!
Six Open teams had some great combo's of players, which is always a treat to watch for all levels of players. We saw some double entry players, which did not take away from their winning games. Mark Hammond/Mike Kearney took First Place with a strong win over Luis Marquez/Mike Roth with scores of 11/14. Luis/Mike had to overcome a strong quarter-final team of Dennis Madden/Terry Nett.
There were four "A" teams with the Feingold Brothers winning a decisive final over Stan Wolpoff/Mike Held, Boulder, with scores of 5/9. The "B" doubles had 8 teams with the name of Hammond coming up again, but this time a father/son combo of Dad, Bob, along with his son, Phil. They went through the ladder & came up First with a win over Nigh/McKinney with scores of 9/18.
